VP Internal Audit

Aimee S. Fennessey, Washington Trust Company

Success Stories: Aimee S. Fennessey

Aimee S. Fennessey leads the internal audit function at Washington Trust Company, where she conducts audit engagements and internal control testing to identify risks and ensure the bank operates safely and effectively. Her work includes special investigations and providing consulting services to business partners across the organization. Beyond day-to-day responsibilities, Aimee manages the audit team’s quality assurance program, supervises and coaches team members, and continuously seeks creative ways to improve the internal audit function while building relationships throughout and beyond the bank.

Before transitioning to banking, Aimee worked in public accounting as an audit and assurance services senior auditor at a regional firm in Providence. She realized that career path wasn’t the right fit due to long hours, travel demands, and limited growth opportunities. Looking for a company with a rich culture, flexible schedule, and room to advance, she pivoted her skills to internal audit in banking—a decision that transformed her career trajectory.

During her banking career, Aimee has earned two promotions, obtained her Certified Internal Auditor certification, and become a trusted advisor across the organization. She was appointed to Washington Trust’s inaugural Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council in 2022 and now serves as Vice Chair. In 2024, she led the development and launch of the company’s first Employee Resource Groups, chairing the ASCEND young professionals ERG during its inaugural year. She serves on various committees and projects representing audit, and was honored as part of Providence Business News’ ’40 Under 40′ Class of 2024. Through these experiences, Aimee has expanded her network exponentially, gained mentors and coaches, and built lasting friendships.

Aimee believes a career in banking offers numerous benefits including flexible schedules, career development opportunities, skill building, community involvement, networking, job security, and competitive compensation. At Washington Trust, employees have opportunities to lead and participate in meaningful community programs like the “Attire for Hire” clothing drive and support nonprofit partners including the Rhode Island Food Bank (through the bank’s annual peanut butter drive, food truck fundraiser, and holiday basket programs), United Way of Rhode Island, Habitat for Humanity, Haus of Codec, Crossroads RI, Non-violence Institute, Women’s Fund of Rhode Island, and many more.

The mission of Bank Forward is to empower individuals who may have felt that a career in banking was out of reach.
